:: MYMBC 2004 AGM and new Committee (23 August 2004)
The MYMBC AGM was held on Sunday 25 July. Newly elected Commodore Richard Tyson commented on the past year. Despite frequent inclement weather, our junior training programme was handled expertly by our chief instructor, Richard Bartlett, assisted by Bill Bradley, Andrew Fell and parents. The coming season should see the Club in a strong position to improve this important area on which the sailing future of the Club depends.
The Club is discussing with the Manukau City Council upgrades to the ramps and car park area, and a resource consent for building improvements. The Club hosted the Manukau section of the Anniversary Day regatta, and the Hartley Auckland Champs. Club races attracted Hartley16s, Sunbursts, Noelex 22s and some other classes.
The incoming MYMBC Committee is as follows:
President: Keith Vazey
Commodore: Richard Tyson
Vice Commodore: Tony Flannagan
Rear Commodore: Steve Pocock
Secretary: John Teesdale
Treasurer: Lynne Jacobsen.
This Committee is supported by other officers, as well as a range of sub-committees. A full listing is available here.
:: National Hartley16 Champs in Thames, January 2004 (25 February 2004)
Three Club boats and crew competed mid January at the National Hartley16 champs in Thames. JK was sailed by Keith Vazey and Steve Pocock; Shoestring by Gary Halton and David Kernot, and Betty Boop by Craig Canute and Jarreth Insley.
Nine races were sailed over 3 days in very light weather conditions. Keith Vazey and Steve Pocock sailed "JK" to a creditable 3rd place on handicap. Keith Vazey commented that the Champs were very well run.
:: MYMBC 2003 AGM and new Committee.
The MYMBC AGM was held on Sunday 27 July at 2pm at the Club's premises. Re-elected Commodore Gary Halton commented on an eventful past year. The Junior Sailing program has seen extensive activity with enthusiastic kids, good coaching and helpful parents. This growth would not have been possible without the input from several Club members, especially John Fairburn, Richard Tyson and Bill Bradley.
On a sad note, three senior members (Brian Kernot, Bryan Smythe and Dick Hampson) passed away this year. They all had made major contributions to the Club, and they will be missed.
A total of 28 races were held this year which attracted Hartley16 and 18s, Sunbursts, Noelex 22s and some other classes. Club members were unsuccessful at the National Hartley Champs but Craig Canute won the Auckland Hartley Owners Association Champs. Major repainting has lifted the Club's interior and changes are planned for the outside. Club members look different too in their new smart black polo shirts with logo!
The incoming MYMBC Committee is as follows:
President: Keith Vazey
Commodore: Gary Halton
Vice Commodore: John Fairburn
Rear Commodore: Richard Tyson
Secretary: John Teesdale
This Committee is supported by other officers, as well as a range of sub-committees. A full listing is available here.
:: Summer Series Prize Giving 2003.
This prize giving was held on 2 May, and as usual the party and the food was a great success. It was great to see so many juniors and their parents turn up. Click on the links for results for seniors and juniors.
:: Unity Shield and Christmas party 2002
21 December was a busy day with the sailing of an Optimist Junior Regatta, completing the junior coaching; the sailing of the Unity Shield (a yearly competition between 3 boat clubs on the Manukau Harbour); and a Christmas barbecue.
While overcast, the weather was accommodating with 12-15 knots, and the Unity Shield was sailed over 2 races. Sailers returned to a well deserved BBQ, followed by Santa who arrived in style on Kingfisher. Photos are available by clicking here. Many thanks to all who helped with the BBQ and food, especially Linda and Gary Halton, Denise Fairburn and Stuart Waugh. Racing would not have been possible without the help of starter Dick Hampson, assisted by Doug Fitchett; and John Fairburn running the senior patrol boat. We also appreciate all those involved in making the junior regatta a success, especially all juniors who participated.
:: Block course Optimist lessons for Juniors
This year the Junior Optimist lessons were held over 2 consecutive weekends in late November/early December, with some intense theory and on the water practice. On the water sailing lessons were done on the Manukau Harbour near the MYMBC Club house, and on the Onehunga pond near the motorway when the tide was unsuitable or the weather too windy. A total of 16 Juniors participated. Photos can be found here.
Many thanks to the parents for their assistance, and to coach Richard Bartlett who received great support from Andrew Fell, Keith Hall, Brendan Bartlett and Thomas Halton. Coaching would not have been possible without the enthusiasm and organisation of Dick Tyson, assisted by John Fairburn, Gary Halton and other Club members. Thanks!!!
:: Get a taste of sailing on the Manukau! (6 October 2002)
Several people took the opportunity to experience sailing on the Manukau Harbour at the MYMBC Open Day on Sunday 3 November. Hartley trailer sailers were on the water to take people for a short sail, and Optimists were on display and joined the Hartleys on the water. Lack of experience did not stop some juniors from giving Optimist sailing a try under the guidance of coach Richard Bartlett and junior patrol boat skipper Dick Tyson. Click here for some photos.
Patrol boat skipper John Fairburn was also kept busy by those wanting to get a different thrill. The Open Day resulted in an intake of juniors for the upcoming coaching lessons, and several new members. Thanks to all who made the Open Day a success, especially skippers and crew of both patrol boats, and Hartley16s Shoestring, JK, Fax, Bizarre and Scaramoush!
While the Club fleet mainly consists of Hartleys, Optimists, P-class and Sunbursts, all types of boats are welcome. We sail socially, and compete throughout the year. For more information about the Club please contact Brian Pilkington (Commodore) by phone (09 636-6993) or email ()
:: AGM held on 28 July 2002 (21 August 2002)
Outgoing Commodore Les Boulton acknowledged that the past year had been a busy one, and that most of the goals he had set himself had been achieved, with great support from the Committee. Junior coaching lessons had been well attended, and will be continued, be it in a different format. Thanks to several successful grants, we now have a junior patrol boat for coaching and race events, as well as a MAC570 patrol boat for racing and other activities. In addition, the boat storage enclosure had recently been tarsealed. Races had been well attended, and it was pleasing to see that boats from outside the Club had joined several races.
In addition to expressing his gratitude to the Committee in general, Les especially thanked John Fairburn for his drive and commitment to obtaining the grant for, and the purchase of the MAC570. John, and Dick Tyson were also instrumental in setting up the junior sailing lesson programme. Gary Halton's success in obtaining grants for several purchases was gratefully acknowledged as well as Peter Dentener's assistance with secretarial activities. And where would we be without the Halton family for organising all those great social activities.
A list of Officers for 2002-2003 can be found here.
:: New patrol boat blessed (21 August 2002)
Sunday 28 July 2002 was a busy day. It started with a Champagne Breakfast at 9am to celebrate the blessing of our new patrol boat. The blessing was carried out by Father Iose Ale from St Anthony's Parish, Mangere Bridge, and life member Val Morris named the boat 'Kingfisher'. Photos can be found here.
The day was completed with senior racing at 12 noon, and the 2002 MYMBC AGM at 3pm, at the Club's premises.
:: National Hartley16 Championships Report by Les Boulton (25 February 2002). Hi and welcome to a report of the above championships. After much yes/no/maybe, we had ten boats, yes all from the Auckland region but none the less a contest big thank you to all who helped organise the event.
There has certainly been an improvement in all Auckland boats since the last nationals. Hartley Moving, Jive bunny and Shocka have new sails. The big improver is "Shocka", remember she was last in every race at New Plymouth. Tapered mast, new sails and minimum weight, these factors do make a difference.
Wednesday afternoon saw a small gathering of owners getting sails measured and their boats weighed. The AGM was held at 1900hrs. Thursday morning saw more measuring and weighing, followed by the briefing. Three races were held Thursday afternoon in a variable 5-10 knot north westerly. The first two races had a split fleet with no favoured side. "Hartley Moving's" new sails proved the winner on the day. The first days potty prize went to "JK" who would rather use their whisker pole for spear fishing than sailing.
Friday dawned with fresh westerlies 20/25 knots. We all wanted Alan Dawson for crew. "Hartley Moving" and "Shocka" struggled with their large sails while "Mac The Knife", "Bizzare" and "Shoestring" came to the fore. The second days potty prize went to "Bizzare" who hit a reef, tacked, didn't let the mainsheet off, boat heeled over, mast in water, Tony jumped out, boat stood upright, started sailing, Andrew stacking out, Tony swimming behind. Only Tony can tell the story but you get the picture.
Saturday was cancelled due to winds exceeding the upper limit. Roll on prize giving. An excellent dinner at prize giving, a good time had by all. I believe the potty was filled twice but don't remember. A good atmosphere engulfed the entire event with the future of the TS16 looking ok. The nationals may need to be at a different time of the year to avoid the Christmas rush.
:: Auckland Hartley16 Owners Association Championships (19 March 2002)
The Auckland Hartley16 Championships were held from 16-17 March 2002 under 18-25 knot conditions, with gusts up to 30 knots. Ten boats sailed with 9 boats representing the MYMBC. First on count-back was "Hartley Moving", with "Mac the Knife" 2nd and "Shoestring" 3rd. First equal on handicap were "Shocka" and "Jive Bunny", followed in 3rd position by "JK".
Three generations of Hartley family members were present when Mrs Hartley handed out the line honours prize, and donated a wooden plaque with a Hartley hull. Photos of the prize giving can be found here.
:: Les Boulton new National Hartley16 Association president (1 March 2002)
Les Boulton has replaced Ian Cameron, who has stepped down as president. Below is his President's Report.
Hi,
Most of you won't know me, or maybe you will. My boat is Shocka, the pink boat at the back of the fleet at the nationals in New Plymouth. Many of you may wonder why a new chum is president. Well Ian Cameron has retired after a long stint at the helm. As I was chairing the nationals committee for the MY&MBC those members suggested that I officially become the president of the national body.
The 2001 Nationals were run by the Manukau Yacht & Motor Boat Club. My thanks to all those involved with the running of the TS16 Nationals. I believe they were a success and hope to see more boats at next year's event. There was only one proposal to run the 2003 event, this being the Waiuku Yacht Club. They are considering all venues in South Auckland and the Waikato. Any suggestions re the timing of the Nationals would be appreciated.
In the immediate future I see a smaller format with the Nationals being run over a weekend with a day each side, and to avoid any major holidays. The Nationals could even be run in conjunction with other class nationals or the masters games. Happy sailing.
